Winter Woods Publishing Team
So you can see that we really are the folks we claim to be, here's just a little bit about us.

Kathryn Balteff
Founder, Acquisitions, Editor
Winter Wood Publishing’s founder Kathryn Balteff works and pens stories and poems from her little cabin on the exquisite, rocky coast of Downeast Maine. Along with her recent novel James and Natasha, released in 2026, some of Kathryn's work has been included in: Water and Stone: Tales of Life Downeast in Maine, No Small Things: The Beautiful Stuff Poetry Anthology 2019-2020, The Beautiful Stuff Blog, Loon Echoes, and Mountain Laurels, among other publications. She finds her greatest inspiration in forests, the sea, the cosmos, and life's mysteries. When she's not working on Winter Woods Publishing’s latest project you may find her scribbling away on her latest novel, or find her in her gardens, or playing her cello, or meandering by the sea or along forest paths with her husband and ttheir faithful canine companions.

Jean Mullins
Poetry Acquisitions, Editor, Technology Queen
Jean Mullins has spent the last six-plus decades seeking answers and trying to make sense of her world through her writing. She enjoyed the many years of raising her son and caring for her parents, yet, with a desire to expand her creative life, she completed an MFA in poetry and creative nonfiction at the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast program. She also holds an M.Ed. in Special Education and Graduate Certificates in both Conflict Resolution and Management/Mediation. Jean’s poetry manuscript, The Not So Simple Truth, was shortlisted as a finalist in the Work-in-Progress Contest at Unleash Press. Jean’s insatiable curiosity propels her into her poems and, once in the poem, it guides her. When writing at her best, the poem does the work and she just writes it down. Her creative vision is to share her inner world with the outside, to show how she has experienced the life of a woman in these six plus decades and how she continues to experience the life of a woman in a time of what she sees as setbacks. She strives to make readers giggle, uneasy, surprised, grossed out, delighted, or even a little frightened.
